Affiliate Marketing Guide for Beginners in Nigeria

Affiliate marketing in Nigeria is a top option among numerous option of making money online, infact this has been my biggest source of blog income, coming above Google Adsense in recent months. This tutorial guide is primarily written for beginners with little to no knowledge about what affiliate marketing entails in Nigeria.

Let us get started right away.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing according to a layman is the practice of promoting the products and/or services of another person which could also be a company in exchange for a commission on the resulting sale. It is a way for a person (the affiliate) to earn a commission for recommending products and/or services from an affiliation company or services to friends or readers.

Affiliate marketing requires you having a site and sending your traffic to someone else’s site to buy their products or services. So for every successful sale gotten by the link from your site, you earn a percentage which is otherwise called an affiliate sales commission.

Here is how it works:

A person (otherwise known as an Affiliate marketer) registers and joins any affiliate programs that suits his/her interest, he in turns searches for a reputable products to promote, and then share those products with their audiences. Any establishment or companies that sell products online, offers an affiliate program, which is free to join. The process is as simple as creating an online profile account.

A simplified process of how affiliate marketing works:

  • A person applies to join any affiliate merchant’s program. If accepted, he will be referred to as an Affiliate marketer.
  • After acceptance, the affiliate marketer will be provided with a unique ID and a specific URL to use when promoting the company’s product and/or service.
  • The affiliate can decide to place the link in their blog content,  email marketing, Facebook post, WhatsApp status, or any other social media sphere, primarily with a conscious efforts to invite prospective buyers.
  • When a potential buyer clicks on the link to visit the affiliate partners’ site, it is recorded to the affiliate marketer that a successful referral has been made, though he only earns when the referred person eventually makes a successful purchase.
  • Then whenever a buyer completes the sale process, the commission will be counted for the affiliate.

Step 1: Choose a Product to Promote as an Affiliate

Choice of product to promote can sometimes prove to be a dicey one most especially for a complete beginner.

No matter the approach you decide on , expect to have to invest time into researching the best products for your audience.

One major thing I advise is for you to only choose to become an affiliate for a product or service that you’ve used  for yourself, had a good experience with, thoroughly tested and feel good recommending. There should be some form of confidence from you that others will get the same results or even better than you’d experienced.

Action Note: Make a list of products and/or services that you make use of, or something that you think your audience or circle would benefit from using. If you are a tech blogger like myself, you might want to consider going for products related to the tech industry.

So, in my case:

Using a search engine like Google, search for “Affiliate program” + (product name).

From the search results, you will see lots of options to choose from.

E.g. Affiliate program + Technology

Step 2: Setup your Affiliation Account

From your search results in step 1, I believe you have good numbers of affiliation companies you must have considered to promote their products. You’ll have to apply, be approved and provide certain information so that you can be paid.

You will need to provide your personal/business contact information and your bank account where commissions will be sent.

Please note, this step is not compulsory for all merchants. Some will require this basic details when you have started earning a reasonable amounts of commission.

In turn, the merchant must provide you with an affiliate link. Whenever you post or write a review about the product, you’ll use this link. It will have a long tag at the end of each link that includes your affiliate ID.

Here is my affiliation link to a top hosting company in Nigeria that I sign up https://www.whogohost.com/host/aff.php?aff=1092

Step 3: Start Promoting Your Chosen Affiliate Products and/or Services

All these hard work of finding and evaluating products, signing up and being accepted can only only pay off if prospective buyers takes your advice and make the purchase.

After signing up for any affiliate marketing program, it is a MUST for you to commit your efforts to promote the business, else you won’t make a single sale.

So go right ahead and write a positive review about those products, share relatable experiences and let potential users know its usefulness as it relates to them.

How to be Successful in Affiliate Marketing (Practical Guides from my 3 Years Experience)

Most successful affiliate marketers I know really do not have any secrets regarding their success. In affiliate marketing, there is a time to sow and there is a time to reap. You can only reap as much as you have sown. Sowing is when you promote the companies products and/or services and “the time to reap” is when the companies reward you with commission on every successful sales you have made.

Let’s dive into the approach that has worked for me:

#1. Decide on a Niche

A niche is very fundamental to what affiliate program you want to join, and tells the kinds of products you aim at promoting.

This goes a long way to determines what affiliate programs and products to focus your attention on and what you want your business will be known for.

TechieBreed is into digital marketing skills, with a focus on WordPress website design.

For those who are into fashion, they will perform well if their niche focuses on specific aspects of fashion such as men’s fashion, women’s fashion or kids’ fashion.

It’s unproductive to focus on multiple niches at a time.

When you’re talking about tech, fashion, health and wellness all at the same time, it confuses your audience. Consequently, your turnover/sales will be affected negatively

Focusing on a more specific niche will help you attract leads from the people that have the tendency to buy your affiliate products not those who will land on your website and bounce away within few seconds.

Their reason for walking away is simply because your content is not relevant to them.

NOTE OF WARNING:

Be duly informed that not all niches are profitable. You can foresee the profitability of a niche by first determining the amount of people that are likely to show interest in the niche.

This is hard to determine for starters, you can leave your thought in the comment box below regarding this subject so that I or any TechieBreed community audience can guide you through on the profitability tendency of your chosen niche.

To avoid laboring in vain, you can place an assessment on your niche competitors to see the engagement rate of their content so far. If most of their posts don’t get read, shares, likes and comments, this could imply that the niche is not profitable (with little to no audience in demand for it).

#2. Only Join Top Paying and Reputable Affiliate Programs

Truth is, there are numerous affiliate marketing programs you can join to start making money online. You just have to ensure you sign up with well known companies with high reputations, and also ensure that they are relevant to your audience.

This is to avoid they playing smart on you, and feeding you with less information to access the number of referrals that comes from you.

#3. Decide on the Marketing Platform to Adopt

Because affiliate marketing is an online business, so therefore,  you need a website, blog or social media effectively run this and make profitable sales.

You can set up a website/blog by yourself by following this tutorial guide I wrote months back without seeing the need to hire a web developer.

Affiliate marketing has been much more easier for me because I have adopted the usage of series of platforms as possible.

For those with an active social media account like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with a good numbers of followers, can perform beautifully well by linking those social media handles to your website or blog. This can be achieved by the usage of Jetpack Plugin which I listed among my recommended WordPress plugin in a recent post.

#3. Target your Audience Only

What this means is that you should only sharing relevant content that resonates with your niche. Targeting doesn’t mean spamming or tricking your audience to take an action.

Spamming is the system of sharing unsolicited content on the web repeatedly to advertise a business on the internet.

Dont be too disturbing, else your audience might report you to Google. You sure know the implication of being reported to google, don’t you?

Too much exaggeration in your marketing campaigns is also not going to help, so i advise you desist from using unrealistic phrases or unreal earning report to compel patronage.

Leave your audience with your real intent to decide what to do with your content.

The good news is, if your content is specific to your niche audience, those who will buy your stuff will do so without being cajoled to do so.

Final Note to Affiliate Marketers in Nigeria

Affiliate Marketing is one of the best few ways of making money online in Nigeria with little to no capital required.

One major thing that I advise us for every prospective affiliate to identify the one big thing everyone in their audience needs to reach their goals; knowing this gives you a good start. This is one mistake most beginners run into when starting out.

Thereafter, you can choose a great product and/or service from that online business you believe in. Share it and tell the story of your successes you have had with it

Provide lots of valuable content that helps and educates your readers, this gives a sense of understanding on your part of the promoted products.

As best as possible, be upfront, honest, and transparent. Nurture the trust that readers place in you.

Once you’ve gained a respectable following, affiliate marketing is one of the best business models for making money.

And the best news is that it’s so easy to get started. I believe the steps outlined in this post is enough  for starting an affiliate marketing business in Nigeria.

And finally, be patient!
